Enfield Choral Society emerged from The Young People’s Society of Enfield, founded by Vincent Evans in 1938. The original Society was formed to provide a bridge for young people leaving the Sunday School choir at Christ Church, Enfield at 16 but being too young to join the adult choir. It was originally conceived with four sections; The Choral Section, The Dramatic Section, The Orchestral Section and the Social Section. From this original arrangement only the Choral Section survived beyond the end of the Second World War to become the Society that we know and cherish today.
In summer 2018 the Society celebrated its 80th anniversary with a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. We perform mainly classical choral works recently including works by Haydn, Rachmaninov and Poulenc, with the summer concert usually being much lighter eg: extracts from Gilbert and Sullivan, Opera Choruses and Songs from the Shows. We have also sung pieces composed by a members of the society, works arranged by our music director, a jazz mass, and in conjunction with a children’s choir. The Christmas Concert usually comprises a collection of short seasonal pieces including traditional carols and more unusual music, as well as readings.
